80-P V-56A questions
80-P V-56A questions
I recently picked up an 80-P VAM-56A in MS-62. There are only 2 in the SSDC (only 1 problem free). This makes 3 and the top pop. It is not visually pretty, but being an uncommon clashed 80-P, it is pretty to me. It has some sort of biologic material on the surface that has stalks growing upwards toward the slab. I have seen this a time or two. It is hard for me to photograph because the depth of field. Hopefully you can see a stalk or two. But in hand, there are many stalks growing upwards.
Questions;
1. Does anyone know what sort of goo grows a mini forest off the surface of a coin?
2. Has VAM-56B been officially eliminated? VW says there is no 56B. But it still shows up on the SSDC.

Sometime within the past 140 years, something got stuck to the coin. A scrap of paper and glue, perhaps? If this forest is actively growing, then you have a different issue, especially if you start noticing tiny monkeys and birds in the trees or other Jumanji stuff.ljs123 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 17, 2020 4:55 pmI recently picked up an 80-P VAM-56A in MS-62. Looks like it. Coins in the registry will need to be changed to 56A. John Coxe may be able to do this automatically.2. Has VAM-56B been officially eliminated? VW says there is no 56B. But it still shows up on the SSDC.

@messydesk
Thank you JB.
There are no coins logged into the VAM-56B SSDC census. But 56B is still on the SSDC list.
56A shows an XF-40, a details AU-58, and now my MS-62.

Alan has the v56a discovery piece
and I sent him the v56B discovery piece
he has both so he could kill it anytime he wants

Just looked at my latest supplement and it is still listed, but is effectively an "empty nest." I made changes to the 1880 page as appropriate.

Re: 80-P V-56A questions
Yes Mitch, I have both the 56A and 56B listing coins. Not sure why I never sent them both to LVA to kill the 56B, but they are definitely the same die pair. I guess likely the reason I didn't is that there didn't seem to be a reason at the time. But thanks Mitch for sending it to me. I forgot I had it.
If folks want the 56B killed, express your thoughts. I have not been sending Leroy coins for a long time because of the seemingly continual downsizing moves he and Marilyn have been going thru, the annual updates, and then the pandemic. Seems like a trivial exercise to me, but if important to others, I guess I can send the coins to him.

Re: 80-P V-56A questions
Thanks Mitch and Alan. Good information.
In a perfect world it would be nice if all listings were accurate without duplication.
For the issues already mentioned and others, I think there are more important things to take care of way before being concerned about killing VAM-56B.
It is good to know that the DCs do match. Maybe for now, someone could attach a link for this thread onto the VAM-56A & 56B pages. At least then others have access to good information that 56B is a duplicate listing.

Re: 80-P V-56A questions
If anyone is interested, I went back and looked at a couple raw coins. My coins match the note on the VAM-56 page. My raw 56 & 56A have different reverses.
"Comments:
1. Most likely two different reverses dies were used for VAM-56 and VAM-56A."
