1921 D1 Necklace Double Reed?

Post by GregK360 » Fri Oct 16, 2020 2:56 pm

I have what appears to be a doubled reed 1921 D1 Necklace (5). There are no photos available to review for the double reed. The first picture below shows the wide reed on the right (Vam-13) and doubled on the left with a normal in the middle, all 1921. The remaining pictures are of the necklace and obverse of the doubled reed.

Many of the D1 reverses have the "necklace". The reeds don't look doubled on your picture in the same manner as the overlapping reeds of 84-O and others, so I'm not sure what I'm supposed to see here.

On a 21, after checking for wide reeds and the reverse hub type, the next thing I look at to attribute is pronounced die cracks and the scribbling scratches.

Yup. With attributing 21p's its a matter of going down the D1/2 crack map list 1-3 times, generally twice, then if not found you either set it aside and give up or take on the scribbles going down the list 1-5/6 times in hopes of an easy match, usually 2-4 times looking at the scribbles on your coin from a different angle each time. Then if its still a no-match you generally either give up or send it to either ANACS or Messydesk's VSS service if you really wanna know. Thats basically how 21p VAMming works

My 1921-P collection does not have a VAM 1 because I have been able to identify every D1 coin I have owned.

Just saying...
When in doubt... don't.

By 1921, all the reeding in collars was done with a drift tool. See From Mine to Mint for details.
