1897 Rusted Die Pitted Obverse Unknown Vam

Post by maessedai » Mon Oct 12, 2020 6:26 pm

I just got this 1897 P that looks to be PL or DMPL, I cannot determine the Vam. There are die polishing lines all over the coin. On the right stars it appears to have some pitting/rust between the stars. The coin looks all original except by those stars where it looks like someone thought they could clean off the rust/pitting. Any idea on the Vam?

The coin has been polished. It is not PL. The pitting by the star on the obverse is in the coin, not the die. To attribute, start with the date position and any repunching of the date. Little else comes into play for 1897.

The portion of the coin you see polishing (Cleaning) on is on the right stars only the rest of the coin does not appear to be cleaned at all. My guess is whoever polished the right stars and right field only was trying to get the rust and pitting on the coin out no realizing it was minted that way. There is no other polishing that I can see on the coin but correct me if you see differently from the pictures. That is why I say it is a pl or dmpl coin that was polished on the right field.

Those hairlines you see on the right stars are no where else on the coin but the mirrors are deep everywhere.

I also looked at every vam on VAMWorld and could not find a matching vam which is the reason for the many pictures. Let me know what you think. Thank you for your help.

What he's saying is that what you think is die pitting isn't. Its some sort of either PMD, likely environmental damage or a planchet issue but definitely not a die issue. Then he's directing you to attribute it and once you figure out which VAM it is you'll see its not a VAM related to a pitted die. Put the pitting notion aside and just straight VAM it. Thats your first step.

Pits in a die, such as from spalling, would be raised on a coin. Actual "rust" on a die of that era would be extremely rare - and likely limited to New Orleans.

Please take a closer look at VAM-11.

"Rust" as mentioned in most VAM listings is used incorrectly. Just so you're aware.
