GSA Carson city coins

Post by JackBnimble01 » Mon Oct 12, 2020 12:14 pm

Are there any records from the grading company’s, of how many coins were removed by them that were in the original GSA holders? Does anyone have the numbers of coins that were put into gsa holders by the government? Would appreciate any help with this! My thought what a Hugh blunder to break these coins out of those holders, only to reverse that decision later!!!

The VAM book has a chapter on the GSA sale and shows the numbers for the sale of CC dollars broken down by date. Pop reports won't give you a good feel for how many were broken out for grading, because not all uncirculated CCs were from the GSA sale and not all "GSA Hoard" coins were cracked out.

Hmm. I haven't heard of any numbers being kept by either of the big 3 TPGS keeping a log of each time they cracked out a GSA internally (back when they wouldn't grade them in the GSA holders) @blu62vette might know for sure or have some insight but I doubt there is a publicly available record of how many each TPG cracked out. Maybe I'm wrong. But even if so that wouldn't account for the numbers that were surely cracked out by the submitters before they sent or just cracked out by collectors in the 70s/80s that wanted the coin and couldn't care less about that giant plastic Tombstone.

It is a bit fo a mess. When PCGS only cracked them and noted GSA that was separate. When they started using the oversee holder they used the same coin number. So basically they combined the pops. I beleive NGC has kept theirs separate. But to know what was cracked is impossible on either side.

Here are the GSA release numbers and% of mintage.

- 1878-CC Mintage 2,212,000 | GSA Hoard 60,993 (2.75%)
- 1879-CC Mintage 756,000 | GSA Hoard 4,123 (0.55%)
- 1880-CC Mintage 591,000 | GSA Hoard 131,529 (22.25%)
- 1881-CC Mintage 296,000 | GSA Hoard 147,485 (49.8%)
- 1882-CC Mintage 1,133,000 | GSA Hoard 605,029 (53.4%)
- 1883-CC Mintage 1,204,000 | GSA Hoard 755,518 (62.75%)
- 1884-CC Mintage 1,136,000 | GSA Hoard 962,638 (84.75%)
- 1885-CC Mintage 228,000 | GSA Hoard 148,285 (65%)
- 1889-CC Mintage 350,000 | GSA Hoard 1 (-)
- 1890-CC Mintage 2,309,041 | GSA Hoard 3,949 (0.17%)
- 1891-CC Mintage 1,618,000 | GSA Hoard 5,687 (0.35%)
- 1892-CC Mintage 1,352,000 | GSA Hoard 1 (-)
- 1893-CC Mintage 677,000 | GSA Hoard 1 (-)

I agree, and feel coins in the original
Holders could be sleepers one day?
Went to a show last Sunday, a dealer
Who claims to have worked for ngc,
Had about 100 CC certificates, for sale
From 1878- 1885
