1903 Clashed chin and nose? Verification help needed.

Post by TVejr » Mon Sep 21, 2020 4:43 pm

Looks like there’s a chin and nose clash on the inside of the upper left wreath leaf cluster. I haven’t been able to find any VAM information about a 1903 with a clashed chin and nose.

Members of SD did study some 1903’s and never found a true clash with Letter transfer

Take a look here we had some revisions and NVs

See if VAM-5 markers are on your coin. Some VAM-5s show a very faint clash like your coin. Look at the second LFCP reverse.

I think that your date location puts you at VAMs 4, 5, and 9.
Good luck

I don't see a clash on your coin. As with any Philly Morgan, start with the date. Look for repunched digits. Since it falls between 1884 and 1904, the date position also comes into play. There are also some doubled profiles for 1903.

Starting to attribute from die clashes, unless they are strong, is usually an exercise in futility as they are not cataloged unless there is lettering transferred from one side of the coin to the other, and there are no such VAMs for 1903.

I didn't see any clashes either, but I am still a novice, though I have a few VAMs under my belt. I don't see any letter transfer. Good photos.
I hate this fracking coin...for now

I am attaching one of the reverse LFCP from the VAM-5 page. That looks similar to the clash that I see on your photos.
With your date location, I think that puts you with one of the following VAMs; 4, 5, or 9.
The VAM-5 photo is the only one I have seen with a similar clash.
Have you looked for the VAM-5 markers yet?
Good luck,
Lee

Thanks for the help. I checked the die markers and it is Vam 5.
