I just added it to the 91-O VAM 1A1 page. No real need to add it to the others.

I also forwarded it to Leroy so that he can add Robert Preston's name as the first to report it.

Nice touch adding that correct discovery to the 1A1 page here. But one wonders if Russ' 1A4 was the "fractured" state on at least one of the coins sent. Nonetheless a very cool find from Roger.

And wonder if the Director of the New Orleans Mint was subsequently spanked. Another letter out there?

Was a short article ever written about it and the variety? Several members mentioned that (I recall), but if nothing has been done I will prepare something for submission to Coin World.

OK.
My approach will be to encourage collectors to look through the documents being added to NNP, with this unusual letter being one of several examples.

Sounds like a good one. Include a picture of the E, too. I can get you one for publication if you want. The pictures on VW are posted under a CC non-commercial license, so CW might not want to use them.

Taking this one step further, a regular column, something like "Treasures from the Archives," highlighting the periodic gem uncovered from these documents, might even be doable. It would show people that there's lots of stuff there, and that the 91-O wasn't just a flash in the pan.

As I close in on retirement, I am looking at completing a die study of the 1891 o Morgan. I am not familiar with the necessary "permissions" needed to include info from here and other sites. Is there a guide to such? I don't want issues with anyone, but would like to include plenty of information. I should be able to do photos of most every VAM from my own set of 91 o's. But I would be interested in being able to include items like this letter if possible. Advice / help?? thanks

Just let me know the format you want for the letter -- PDF, JPG, Freshly Squeezed, etc. The letter is also available on the Newman Numismatic Portal (NNP) for free download. Look for US Mint, Philadelphia, Entry 1, 1891, Box 172.

I would need a detail of the lower reverse and also some quotes from VAMworld 1891-O listing. Article will explain how this occurred, its interest among collectors. Will emphasize both the unknown content of Mint Archives and the extreme rarity of finding such specific documents.

This is so awesome. The original letter, the posting here, and a future Coin World article. Thanks all involved.🐍

Would be interesting to find correspondence between the mint directors of Philadelphia and New Orleans on this matter.

Any correspondence would typically be between the Mint Director in Washington and the Superintendent at New Orleans. However, the Director might have wanted input from the Engraver at Philadelphia. So far, the letter is isolated with no follow-up known.
