Ohio State Show in Dublin

Post by vampicker » Sat Sep 05, 2020 7:44 pm

The annual show sponsored by CONA was held yesterday and is winding down today. Got to spend some time with Brian at his table and also saw Eric Justice and his sons. No company table this year, but still did several opinions. The Barber Coin Collectors Society had something pretty damn cool on display at their table. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake and resultant fire destroyed much of the old city. Many residents had money badly damaged in the fire. The Mint redeemed what they could identify or estimate by weight. This welded stack of 5 half dollars and two Morgans was redeemed at face value for $4.50. An employee thought is was cool and bought it at the same price, holding it in his personal collection for decades. The dates aren't visible but the New Orleans mintmark on the top dollar is clearly evident.

Now that is cool. As a structural earthquake engineer by training (yes, training in what happened in the 1906 SF earthquake), and numismatist, I would have bought it hands down. Thanks for sharing 8-)

Wow. Rock solid provenance is everything in terms of value, and 90% of the cool-factor with something like that. How insanly awesome! And the foresight of the employee adds the cherry on top of the coolness 😎🤤

I once found a 1902-O VAM-45A that was fire damaged. It is in Pete's (Vamhusker) collection unless he has let it go. Supposedly it was slabbed by ANACS with a "seared red" label. There is a story behind that label that involves Pete, Fogie, JR and me. Not sure if Pete ever sent it in to get that label however. @vamhusker

Yes I still have the coin and it is “seared” in an ANACS holder. It’s one of those coins I’ll always keep for the memories

the show was busy! not much picking to do. sold quite a bit of stuff, and had a nice time talking with JR. my best pick was a 1900o/cc vam 7 au53, and a 1879s r78 that haven't pinned down yet. still working on it. also found an au 1935d 5c fs-502. very tough coin. i recently sold the stand alone top pop, pcgs64. and it came with quite a story.
