1983 P

Post by Pareidoliac » Tue Sep 04, 2018 12:39 am

I’m new to Vamworld, still learning. I have a BU 1883 Morgan with a long die crack running
from the I in UNITED to the first S in STATES; it appears again between the
A and the T in STATES. There is also a small die chip connecting the
bottoms of the 1 and 8 in the date as well as a die crack connecting the
first left star at bottom of obverse and the lip of Lady Liberty's neck. I
do not see this die variety on any VAM lists.
Can this be a new VAM? The diagnostics are clear and visible with the
naked eye.

Post a close-up of the 18 if you can. It sounds like it might be VAM 21.

First of all, Welcome to VAMWORLD.

The cracks you mention are not always a clear marker of any certain VAM.
There can and will be different stages in cracks and breaks that will come as the dies are over used .
EDS, MDS,LDS to name a few.
Try to find other specifics that can lead you to a root VAM and then see if the cracks match.

In this case , the chip in the 18.

Check VAM-21 and see where that goes.

Odd - there were photos posted, but now I don't see them...

Anyway, I agree with the VAM 21 assessment. That notch between the 1 and 8 is sort of distinctive, especially combined with the break from the neck to the star like that. It's also Reverse 1, with the nice die breaks that you note.

That knotch, or die chip that you refer to is a misplaced date. It is the base of a 1.
