OT - What would you do?

Post by VamHelsing » Sat Aug 22, 2020 11:22 pm

I may be sending a friend about $1000 face value in 90% junk silver through the mail.
Would you send it all in one package or split it up into 2 or more packages?
Other options? I'd send them registered. Any advice will be listened to!

Make sure package is VERY secure. I purchased this type before and the package was 'damaged' due to handling. Everything was in the package, but it was ripped along one whole side...kenny

Army-Navy surplus store for a metal ammo can. Then put that inside a box.
Just a thought :)
Good luck

I recently did this on a smaller scale ($280 face).

I broke up things into several smaller groups and put each one in a stout ziploc bag, then put multiple bags into smallish boxes. Then the smallish boxes went into a bigger box, and that one went into a medium Priority box. Lots of tape on everything.

It was over the top and took a long time to do, but I sent it on its way without any worry.
When in doubt... don't.

$1000 face is going to weigh about 55 pounds with a melt value of around $19K. I'd split it up into at least 2 boxes. I would actually pack it tightly into small flat rates and secure those inside a medium or large flat rate so that the box is balanced and there's no sound when you shake it. You could also use PCGS boxes for the inner box, since they're quite sturdy. Consider rolling them into bank wrappers to make packing easier. If you can't get those, you could fashion makeshift rolls using paper, like the eBay scammers do.

I'm disappointed in everyone - nobody has said "just drive on over to my house and drop it off" LOL Seriously though, careful shipment in two or 3 packages sounds like a decent plan. Good luck getting it done safely.

I would divide it in half, and vacuum pack it food saver bag to prevent rattle, then Express Overnight no insurance, but with signature confirmation. Works everytime. Don't send it on a Friday or a weekend.

Pre-Covid, I would get a cheap SW ticket and deliver it. Can get 60lbs in the overhead and/or under the seat.

I did that once too. Direct flight to buyer's city, he met me at the bottom of the escalator and we had coffee a few steps away. Then I handed him my carry-on bag, went back up the escalator, and flew home. It was a perfect arrangement, although it felt exactly what I imagine a drug deal must be like!

And that's actually what my insurance company prefers. Don't have FedEx in transit over the weekend (USPS Express is OK) or use registered mail.

I bought a $1000 bag from a dealer years ago, it came in a blue monster box with two canvas coin bags inside. I got $500 in dimes and $500 in quarters. I remember it having over $100 in postage on it. Probably costs 3 times that now.

I take at least a few hours to see the city before returning.

Yeah, it goes down like a drug deal. (Like the Phil Spector scene from Easy Rider.)

Was this pre-TSA? I would think $1,000 in junk silver in a carry-on bag might raise some questions.
