OT - 1976 Ike Clashed Letters D WE plus INDENT
OT - 1976 Ike Clashed Letters D WE plus INDENT
PCGS specimen with unabraded clashed letter transfer D WE plus obverse INDENT plus rotated reverse die 90 degrees clockwise. Location of clashed letters D WE identical to NGC specimen previously posted on this forum which also displayed obverse mirror brockage and 100 degree counter clockwise rotation. Both of these two major error Bicentennial Ikes were struck from the same identical dies!!
Found the indented rotated clashed Ike back in 2000 after searching a hoard of 3300 mixed date UNC Ikes.
Purchased the NGC error Ike back in 2019 which shows identical die markers as PCGS specimen. Simply incredible how these two brother Ikes were reunited by me when the mintage of 1976 copper nickel variety 2 Ike dollars stands at 113,318,000 according to "The Official Red Book".
Obverse indent shows outline of Ike's neck and head in floor of crater. Object which caused indent must have been metallic (probably a large planchet fragment) in order to transfer the outline image to that depth.
Reverse rim and field shows struck through and retained small copper fragments.

Multiple clashes (five or more) probably enabled the dynamic die rotations. The one clash that transferred three letters D WE must have been exceptional !!

That is a really cool coin! Great find in a bag of Ikes, but that really goes without saying.

Wow, after seeing the previous one in hand, i never imagined that you’d get another one. I knew there had to be more from this but...

Yeah Brian, I never dreamed there could be another even more dramatic error/variety brother Bicentennial Ike struck from identical dies! I will never forget the confused expression on your face when I told you I had an Ike with the moon coming out from under his chin. The following day at that RCC Expo Coin Show was when I actually showed you the PCGS Indented obverse rotated reverse 90 degree CW multi-clashed MS 63 specimen. The NGC specimen with obverse mirror brockage rotated reverse 100 degrees CCW multi-clashed dies surfaced last year in Florida. I felt absolutely "Thunderstruck" when I held both of these Ikes.

This IKE $ shows strong obverse clashed collar die marks below and right of date with adjacent rim die break.
Recent discussion about rim die breaks resulting from collar clashes prompted me to post this example. Another weaker obverse collar clash is also evident at 1:00.
Clashed collar die marks can only occur on the hammer die. Obviously, the obverse of this 1976 Bicentennial Clashed Error Ike was struck from the hammer die.

What an incredible hot mess!
Reminds me of some past relationships - but at least this coin will hold its value over time...

This is one cool, wonky coin. Well done indeed!
Re: OT - 1976 Ike Clashed Letters D WE plus INDENT
I do not think that is the way it was intended to look.... Nice score!
Re: OT - 1976 Ike Clashed Letters D WE plus INDENT
Personally, I think Ike looks better on this one
