my new 1903-O has character!

Post by DHalladay » Mon Aug 27, 2018 10:51 pm

Before I sold my Morgan set and paid off the house, one of the few upgrades I was considering was a 1903-O in MS66. But it never happened because I couldn't find one that I liked enough.

Then last week on eBay a PCGS coin with a CAC sticker came up that, even with the seller's not-very-good photos, I could tell was probably "the one". Plus, it looked like a VAM 4A with the clashed ovaloid at Liberty's neck. So an offer was made, countered and accepted... and the waiting began.

When it arrived today (much earlier than expected) it exceeded my highest expectations! It is, indeed, "the one". And when I put it under my macro lens and extension tubes, I found all kinds of interesting things:

Super coin Dennis! I like my VF 20 but a 66, thats a whoa too! About the "gouges" at ONE, are they gouges or polishing lines? The term seems to be interchangeable for the feature depening on the date/VAM. Just something I've been wondering for a while.

Beautiful broken mintmark.
Thanks for sharing.

That's the 03-O to get for a date set. Do you have a full-coin picture?

Not nearly as good as your pixs John – haze looks horrible here (I didn't realize there was any!) and the lustre doesn't come out nearly as strong as in hand – but here goes:

Dennis,

That's a Class coin! Both ovaloids are clearly seen in the photo's you posted. :)
