1902 O Silver Dollar

Post by lhnumis1 » Fri Jul 03, 2020 8:58 pm

This coin resists my attributing it. The description below is from my comment in an Excel file-all capital letters. Apologies in advance for the capital letters and if the description proves to be long winded. In addition, please find several digital images. If more are necessary, please request those needed and I will try to supply them. I would have have supplied more images, but, the application allows only 5 images to be supplied at one time...at least on my ancient 'desktop'. My weak computer skills limit my ability to get around this problem.

All comments, opinions, etc., always welcome.

Try the crack finders on the Attribution Guides toggle on the 1902-O VAM page on VW Home.

Thank you LDMG for pointing to the crack finder links, they were quite helpful. I examined the links for the near date obverses and C4 reverses. VAM44 seems to come closest, but, in my opinion is not a match. I am submitting five more images in the hope that something positive will turn up. I will add more images indicating cracks on both sides of my coin in an additional post. I trust this does not get too confusing. Please feel free to comment.

Thanks LDMG. I see that you like the VAM44. It seems the lack of a more complete description and small number of images on the VAM44 webpage is making it difficult for me to accept it as a match. Does it have the die gouge above the 'T' in 'Liberty' and the doubled IGWT with filled G and E'? If so, I am all in.

For those interested, five more images follow. image OBV23 is star 6 on the left.

I do not pay attention to filled G's or e's. These usually are progressive on dies meaning some coins will have them, and some do not. Everything on your coin says VAM-44.

But look for this PUP. It may be that your coin is LDS such that it doesn't show however.

Do not have the PUP on the eagle's chest...but OK call it done.

If Alan (Latedate) says it's a V44, it's done.
He literately wrote the book on that date series.

Thanks John. My work is so old now that I suspect a lot of folks don't know of my work on this series. I am always willing to try and help however.

Speaking of that, I’m still hoping to find a used 02-O guide. If anyone wants to sell a used copy please contact me.
I LOVE Alan’s 04-O guide.
