1923 S Peace dollar double clash spikes VAM?

Post by livingwater » Thu Jul 02, 2020 10:46 pm

I have this 1923 S Peace dollar with reverse double clash spikes. I've looked at all the listed ones on VAMWORLD and cannot find a match. Maybe I missed it. Of all the double clashed spikes shown on VAMWORLD mine seems to be the same reverse die and clashes position match to VAM-1CY. But this variety has cracks on the obverse. Mine only has file lines by R on the obverse, no cracks. Perhaps mine is a VAM-1CY EDS before the cracks developed, at least that's what I'm thinking. Or, maybe this coin has it's own VAM number shown in a later supplement update I am not aware of? Thanks for looking and for any opinions. This coin was one of a tube of 20 Peace dollars I bought from my local coin shop a few years ago at $15.50 each. I found several VAM varieties among them, one a DDR, of course all well circulated "junk silver" but fun to identify. Stay safe.

After VAM 1CY was made, this reverse die was paired with a new obverse, creating VAM 1EZ. Your coin is worn, so I cannot determine if the die chip below B of LIBERTY is present. Or, your coin may have been struck before the die chip was formed.
Good job in VAMing this coin!

It does seem to have an obverse small chip on ray below B and a chip above O on reverse. Thanks David for sharing your knowledge. Mark
