1878 7/8TF newbie needs help with first vam

Post by platero83 » Sun Jun 28, 2020 3:05 am

Hi, everyone, I hope you all are well. I am totally new to VAMs and this is the coin that is starting it off for me. I just won this at auction and the description didn’t note any VAMs.

I didn’t notice anything special about this coin until I saw the bid go higher than expected. I stared at it a bit more and saw that Liberty was doubled. I then noticed that the motto and stars were doubled as well. The reverse has doubling around the arrow feathers. I find a lot going on with with this coin. I’m hoping I can have a more experienced eye take a look at it. I don’t have the coin yet in my possession so I apologize for the low resolution pictures. They are screen shots from the auction pictures.

I’d appreciate any info and thoughts on this coin very much. Thanks in advance.

Took some different screenshots since I can’t download original auction picture. Hoping these are better quality. Sorry if not in order.

From what I can tell my coin best matches the 1878 VAM-38 7/5. It’s seems like it’s a really nice quality coin too. I’m planning on sending it in to get graded when I get it. Any thought on where I should send it and info on the process?

When shooting a coin Start with the date one with the bust point One without. Then Liberty band. Follow with neck and Ear. Then obvious doubling.
Then Reverse— Level mintmark then scribble zone. Follow with any Clash evidence. Then any obvious doubling,
Shoot Full Obverse and Reverse—
Then let guys request shots

Check these. http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compu ... elcome=yes

And Welcome

Nice quality of the pics! You'll fit in well here. Most coins you need help on just post what's called LFCP's (Large Full Coin Pics) which are basically the first 2 pics you posted, a closeup of the date like you did and one of the mint mark. Then others here will ask for other specific areas if we need them. Welcome!

Thanks everyone. I’m hoping to have the coin in a few days so I’ll take some more pics when I do.

I too am new - that looks like a fun coin to me, and in nice shape, good job. I agree with your call of 38 (for what its worth).

Welcome to the addiction. That's a fine first-time pick.

The vam 38 has a lot going on and many easy PUP'S pick up points to reference
As vams go this 7/8 TF is referred to "As common a snot" but even as prices dropped the
last 5 yrs, collectors really kept buying this one at a nice premium.

I sold a vam 38 ms63DMPL about a yr ago - Interesting how some pretty tougher rarer vams
have tanked in price whice some others like this vam 38 have held value fairly well due to
simple popularity

Much of the "extra" material including the vestigial feathers are remnants of 8-TF dies being re-baisened then struck with Morgan's new 7-TF hub, This was all manual work and every die is slightly different - including some 7-TF coins that are really 7/8-TF with no clean remnants.

Have fun! Nice coin BTW.
