Recommendation of Morgan to be Engraver of United States Mint

Post by RogerB » Sun Jun 21, 2020 12:16 am

The letter shown below was sent by Sir Charles William Fremantle, Knight Deputy Master of the Royal Mint in London to Director of the U.S. Mint Horatio Burchard recommending George Morgan be appointed Engraver at the Philadelphia Mint. Evidently, the letter was suppressed and never reached the Secretary of Treasury, who then - having no recommendations other than Charles Barber - appointed Barber effective in January 1880.

Morgan stayed on as an Assistant Engraver until Barber died in 1917.

One wonders what, if anything, would have been different if the Engraver's job had gone to Morgan.
