A 1921-P VAM ohmygod!!

Post by DHalladay » Fri Jun 19, 2020 9:44 pm

This NGC-64 arrived today via eBay. I bought it for 3 reasons:
1. It had a lot of interesting polishing on the reverse.
2. Despite that, I couldn't identify it.
3. It was cheap, so what the heck... I had to satisfy my curiosity.

The scream you may have heard earlier today was when I recognized what it was.
And let me say again it's an NGC-64, and a nice one at that.
When in doubt... don't.

Check the D2 scribbles guide, but start from the end; it'll save you time.

Unlike all of the other examples I have seen or been told about by their owner, this coin does not have a semi-PL obverse; it has 'normal' brilliant frosty surfaces. The finger-feed gouge patches at STA and OF are bigger than the semi-PL coins, too. But the scribbles don't lie.

:o
When in doubt... don't.

Nope.
It's in a slightly older style holder where the coin is flush against the white plastic.
It has to come out, or at least be reholdered, of course.

Uh oh.
It looks like dreams have been crushed... and this time not by JR.

Polishing lines below In and under the eagle's beak are a match to an EDS of 45, plus the little spike behind the eagle's neck.

Wait, is the FF scrape on all of them?

Weak scrapes on 44 at TA, extremely weak at OF.
Weak scrapes on 45 at TA (my MS63), very weak at OF but more at AM
Huge scrapes at TA on 45 (this 64), good scrapes at OF and some at AM
No scrapes at TA or OF on 101, just a trace at AM
When in doubt... don't.
