Extensive die cracking and low quality was eventually attributed to improper annealing of planchets. But with mint HQ demanding that New Orleans make more dollars than they could correctly anneal, the same problem reappeared year after year.

Yours is "more rare" only if it has tiny arrows pointing to the cracks.

Of course! I think I am(unintentionally or perhaps subconsciously)collecting Crack City as it's own "list"! Love it! :)

Whatever you've got, I think I have it's identical twin. Exact same crack pattern, around the inside of the rim on the reverse, except a little smaller & fainter (but not that much.) I'm not seeing any of the doubled features on the front of mine, even under a (cheapie) digital microscope at max magnification. I hope I don't sound too stupid asking this question, because I have been collecting coins for only 2 years, and I have very little experience: is it possible that my coin was struck by the same reverse, but a different obverse? The crack pattern is VERY distinctive; but the obverse doesn't match any other VAM that I have seen so far - it seems to be quite plain, ordinary, and un-exotic in every way.

As Yul Brenner said, in The King and I, "'Tis a PUZZLEMENT!"

The best past of the story is that I bought this from a local coin shop, run by a true professional - and he didn't catch it! The die cracks are small and often hard to see, unless there's light coming in from the side, so I'm not *that* surprised he missed that it had die cracks. I didn't notice either, until I got my microscope, and decided to take some pictures before I sent my coin back to the bank for safe-keeping. I was surprised as hell!

Anyway, I'd love to know what the story is, with BOTH of our coins. I took some pix of mine, but I can't figure out (yet) how to post them to this thread? I'm not seeing any obvious way to upload them from my local disk. The button that looks like a "download picture" button doesn't do anything (but annoy me.)
