1878-P VAM 9 and 9A: which one is tougher?

Post by DHalladay » Thu Aug 16, 2018 10:57 pm

The SSDC pops are much different – 66 non-details VAM 9s are registered vs. 24 VAM 9As – but is that because of TPG attribution practices or is it reality? I notice, by the way, that VAM 9 has an R rating of 7 and 9A has a rating of 6.

This will always generate a controversy, but I had thought the event the stop the production after the first day's cited number, was the clash. Perhaps the 9a was a different day and the dies, were briefly in service to supplement other presses for a production quota. The 9 comes mint state or close to it often enough to figure the initial 303, whether formall presentation or not, we're really more keepsakes than commerce coins. 9a seems to have entered commerce channels and is found in circulated grades and often impaired. I suspect few were made in my suspected supplementary batch and that not all were saved. Clashes were not collected.
