I had a fun gold morning!!

Post by DHalladay » Sat Apr 11, 2020 10:23 pm

"Hey, I just got a dozen rolls of B.U. Morgans. Want to come over Saturday and look at 'em?"

I get this kind of call every so often from a local dealer friend. He gets free VAMing and I get a chance to look at coins; we always have a blast.

But it turned out that Morgans weren't all I got to see. He also had a big old pile 'o gold that had been bought back in the 1980s. All had passed electronic analysis as being real gold. The coins were still in their original flips with old-school grade stickers that immediately became laughable

Many of the VFs turned out to be AU; the rest were XF.
Some of the XFs were strong AUs, most were 62-63 BUs. None were XF.
It was a super fun blast from the past!

The Morgan rolls were all common dates -- 1879-S (2), 1880-S (2), 1881-S (2), 1882 (1), 1883 (1), 1885 (1), 1897 (1) 1904-O (1), and a 1921-P roll (1) that was nearly all sliders.

But one of the 1881-S rolls was stunning. To our eyes there were four MS67s, seven 66s, and eight 65s. The "dog" of the bunch was a 64, and it was stunning. I've never seen a roll like it.

Happy Easter everyone!

First you get to make selfies with a very attractive lady with pink ears! Then you get to look a lot of really cool coins!

I should be so lucky?

Happy Easter to All!

Be careful with the gold There’s a lot of fake stuff out there. I have books and books on it you would be surprised how our early Americans messed with gold coins

Not a bad way to spend your day! Is the 81-S roll going to grading when everyone opens up again?

Looks like it. My dealer friend almost never keeps rolls to grade, but he texted me this afternoon saying this is maybe the best one he's ever had, so he's going to grade it.

Wow is right! Out of curiosity, what is the name on the flip inserts and are the flips soft?

Investment Rarities, Inc.
no address, but phone number 1-800-328-1860

And yes, flips are/were soft.
