lost and found

Post by fogie » Thu Mar 05, 2020 5:42 am

1904-O VAM14. John Coxe, Mark Witkower and I spent some time at the last Long Beach show working on this one. Identical obverse die used for the 1904-O V3 BUT this one had been clashed and repolished. It also has a different reverse die. @LateDateMorganGuy , @PacificWR Please post to the 1904-O VAM 14 page.

Wow! That's a big deal. At least for me.
Thanks for the great detective work.

Did you check this coin against a VAM-29?
The obverse clash looks just like the G clash of VAM-29.

Sharp eye LJS. Those same markers are on my VAM-29, with exception of doubling of "04."
I've got to get some shut eye, but I'll be back and can provide photos if needed.

Looks like VAM-29 is a duplicate listing of VAM-14.

Maybe not what everyone would do, but I treat the later listings with more reliable PUPs as the go-to VAM for a certain die pair, rather than earlier listed VAMs with little to no PUPs listed or plated. In this case, when LVA listed the VAM-14, he was not listing "ticks" of clashed letters.

People can call the die pairs and associated stages/states whatever they want when they apply the little white stickers.

In my work, this coin is a VAM-29 and VAM-14 is a red-haired stepchild.

well burst my bubble! Good call - this is in fact the VAM29 and we still do not have a VAM14.

Looks like VAM-29 is a duplicate listing of VAM-14.
And this is why I don't think it's a good idea to make the VAM number part of the image. If the VAM turns out to be a duplicate or gets eliminated, the photo becomes wrong and confusing to anyone without intimate knowledge of the VAM's history when it's moved to the right page.
