1878-S Long Nock meaning?
1878-S Long Nock meaning?
Excuse me for not knowing, but after owning many VAM's and buying the book, then the update- many of these names are listed as though you already know what they men. Can someone please explain to me what the long nock is? I'm looking through a few Unc 1878-S to get the VAM's. If I can get the hierarchy for 1878-S then maybe get the VAM. Long nock seems to be a big category for this date. Thank you, Craig.

Thank you, this gives a clue what my 1878-S are not. Now, to dig in and eliminate a few more VAM's I will finally get to the right one. -Craig

With 78s, when quick-scanning, I look at RIB for doubling, cotton leaves for the v19 gouge, middle of wings for Dragon/spaghetti, and of course the wing/body gap for acid + arrow feathers for the nock.
78s is one of the more "fun" dates to go through when scanning a bunch of coins by date/mint at shops & shows.

If you'd found two uncirculated long nocks you might next find some unwelcome visitors at your door...

Hi Craig,
Welcome to VM,
If you catch the Long Nock Virus, there is no cure!
That little pointy thing on the Rev and behind the arrows can sneak up on you
And stick you on your Botox and clean you out of your Vamunition.
I know from experience.
There are only 9/10 Different die par known as Long Nocks ( B-1 Rev) and +/- 114 die par known as
B-2 Revs.
Sincerely
Mr. 78-SLongnock

Re: 1878-S Long Nock meaning?
A while back Pete (Mr Long Nock) asked me if i had any B1 reverse Morgans
I had no idea what the H he was talking about? Being aware of Long Nocks PUP'S and terminology
only. Goes to show how dies and pairings mean virtually nothing to me as a older collector
Im starting to catch on but not to interested, just outta neccessity do i follow it some.
Youner collectors & many seasoned vammers are really into dies, like Russ James is a fanatic about
a few, so thats great to preserve and further interest as a whole.
As im on the way out of coins and Vams, i think ill spend more time Boating/ fishing/ cruising on lakes,
and messing around Gold Mining, Aas well as trading futures a bit and hoarding silver and gold
Thanks to all that dig into the die thing and good luck moving forward

OK, I just checked all my 78-S, and as you might imagine they are not long nock's. So no one needs to visit, but hopefully you can see me here on the friendly confines of this forum. -Craig.impairedsquirrel wrote: ↑Thu Feb 27, 2020 6:38 pmIf you'd found two uncirculated long nocks you might next find some unwelcome visitors at your door...![]()

I checked, and no, as could have been predicted- no long nocks among them.impairedsquirrel wrote: ↑Thu Feb 27, 2020 6:38 pmIf you'd found two uncirculated long nocks you might next find some unwelcome visitors at your door...![]()

Most surviving 78-s LN’s (B-1) were thrown ( Literally) into circulation. As an example, Because of poor die preparation by an “ intern” , the Vam 60 Rev die only survived long enough to mint 1000 coins.
There are Very few surviving high grade LN’s. The remainder are low grade and most were rotor- rooter to death.

Yes, when my dad was able to get bags of Morgan's from the bank (til' 1964), many of them came from Vegas with horrendous gouges that went all the way across the coins- from the old slot machines. Hopefully most of those culls were melted when silver hit $50/oz. in 1979. I imagine they'd bring lots of money with them, so they might not be all that unwelcome.impairedsquirrel wrote: ↑Thu Feb 27, 2020 6:38 pmIf you'd found two uncirculated long nocks you might next find some unwelcome visitors at your door...![]()

Oh yes, I've got it now. But we all know as fate would have it that I do not have one. I think I saw one AU58, one MS 62 on NGC's population data. Not to despair though, I have had some interesting things turn up in this pursuit.messydesk wrote: ↑Fri Feb 28, 2020 3:01 pmI imagine they'd bring lots of money with them, so they might not be all that unwelcome.impairedsquirrel wrote: ↑Thu Feb 27, 2020 6:38 pmIf you'd found two uncirculated long nocks you might next find some unwelcome visitors at your door...![]()

Since the Eagle is holding arrow's to shoot a squirrel in a tree.
Naturally you have your arrow parts.
The arrow head to pierce the nasty rodent.
The shaft for the attachments.
The fletching to help guide the arrow to kill the rodent.
The nock, which the string of the bow will rest in to propel the arrow into the nasty squirrel.
Basic parts of the arrow to shoot and kill squirrels.
It's boils down to squirrel killing.
It's best to look in junk buckets to find these. And squirrels as well.

Re: 1878-S Long Nock meaning?
Thank you for your wisdom, now I finally see that the nock is what holds the "notch" part of the arrow. We can all be appreciative that at least Mr. Morgan got is arrows correct on his dollar. Imagine that happening, even after spending all that time with the lovely (1878 version) of the school teacher model..JohnGoldsmith wrote: ↑Sat Feb 29, 2020 12:44 amSince the Eagle is holding arrow's to shoot a squirrel in a tree.
