More questions:
What's the marker that shows the VAM 26 EDS being earlier than VAM 60?
What's the marker that shows there being a VAM 26 remarriage, and does it show up in lower grades typical of the 78-S B1s?
Are there enough high grade coins to ascertain the relative population of the two VAM 26 remarriages as compared with VAM 60?

So, just to make this perfectly clear:
The 1878-s Vam 60 piece with the engraved inscription “ONE OF THE FIRST TEN COINED APRIL 17Th 1878 From J. Gus Burt “ that was
In the legendary ELiasberg collection, is one of the 10 presentation pieces.
BUT it’s not the first 1878-S using the B-1 Rev. That belongs to Vam 26 EDS!
The 78-S Vam 58 SP65 pictured here is one heck of a masterpiece that was extremely
Well struck and must have been one of the first off the line from the Vam 58, Vam 56 & Vam 62
Series.
But it’s NOT one of the presentation pieces from April 17th afternoon ceremony.

This is such a great new chapter in the history of Morgans, VAMs, and Longnocks!
When in doubt... don't.
Re: PCGS just graded an 1878-S VAM 58 SP65!
Your thoughts about this coin are the same as mine. It is clearly a specially handled coin. Someone acquired one after the initial ceremony for whatever reason -- they missed the ceremony, they wanted another for someone else or themselves, their kids were fighting over the one from 4/17, another VIP just happened to show up, or what have you. The 1,000 coins made before the die breaking would have taken 12 1/2 minutes at 80 coins per minute. The mint records that Roger Burdette dug up regarding the 78-S coinage reports don't go back into April, but there are a few dies that made 10,000 or fewer coins. If these are some of the scarcer B1s, then 1,000 coins for one of the stoppers is not unreasonable.vampicker wrote: ↑Wed Aug 08, 2018 4:31 pmPrior to the announcement, Coin World contacted me about this piece. To clarify a key point, only the Reverse die of the 78-s Vam 60 “broke”.
The OB die Went on to produce the remainder of Vam 57’s & Vam 26 LDS!

The post on the PCGS board that I linked at the start of this thread is still active, relevant, and interesting after over 150 replies, including a documented sale for $1.10 in 1910.

Re: PCGS just graded an 1878-S VAM 58 SP65!
For a number of years, There has been a known 1878-s Vam 58 PCGS 65PL in the PCGS pop report.
Comparing the pictures from the PCGS system regarding this known PCGS 65PL Vam 58 & this “new” Specimen Vam 58 PCGS 65PL,.....
These two Vam 58’s are the same coin!
See nick on the rim of the Rev between E & D. There are no nicks or Rev die nicks on any other
Vam 58’s.
The search continues........

Re: PCGS just graded an 1878-S VAM 58 SP65!
I now see where this crazy
idea Is coming from of the Die pair traveling back to Philly in 1878 Via fedex, ups, usps train boat or some sort
Of transporter. 🤪 it is being floated over on the PCGS forum. It’s bunk!
Lol, the SFO mint workers actual put the Vam 58 OB through three confirmed stages. EDS, MDS, & LDS. ( I have all three thanks
To friends like .....Kenny) The Vam 58 specimen piece is EDS. Once the Vam 58 OB Die went thru the LDS stage, it was retired or it broke,
The Rev continued on to be married with the 78-s Vam 56 OB. That would be a neat trick in 1878
To mint Vam 58 on both side of the continent.
