HISTORY LESSON O/T ?

Post by VAM-PIRE » Mon Jan 13, 2020 9:04 am

Greetings everyone-Maybe a little o/t, but does anybody know about when the first coin or bill sold or traded for more than face value? Would the word numismatic have come around about the same time? Food for thought.

The eventual root of numismatic is the Greek νόμος. with the French using the word "numismatique" in the 18th century. The hobby goes back much further than that, with there being well-documented collectors among Renaissance nobility and scholars, hence the name "hobby of kings." Caesar Augustus was known to give out coins (not just of himself) as gifts. While he probably didn't pay more than face value for them, someone on the secondary market might have.
