1881O......?

Post by Prider358 » Wed Jan 08, 2020 1:50 pm

Hi everyone, any feedback appreciated as always. Struggling to attribute this coin. A lot of Die Cracking on OBV and REV, also, Clashing. Also, not sure if it's my eyesight but there seems to be a great deal of PITTING on OBV and REV. Any 81 O lovers on here.

That crack through the mm makes it easy.
Try VAM-53

Since you brought up die cracking I will direct you to this page first. http://www.1881o.com/vam47matrix.html

I cannot see the whole coin obverse or reverse, but if you will look through my web site I feel sure the answer is there. You mentioned a lot of die cracking and the VAM 47 has just that with a distinctive crack running down through the mint mark. However this is not the only VAM with a similar mint mark crack.

Good call HawkeEye. Steve's obverse cracking seems to match the VAM-47 obverse.
I guess that VAM-47 needs to be added to the Broken Branch Mint Mark set.

I updated the VAM 53 page to note the reverse die was later used on VAM 47. I saw the crack through the mint mark and throught of VAM 53 right away, too. Date is an obvious match for VAM 47. VAM 53 is probably the most common 81-O variety. VAM 47, not so much.

Thanks Lee, HawkeEye and messydesk, the VAM-47 seems to be the perfect match. What about that line in the first eight, top loop..?

Probably just a stain of some sort.

Thank you HawkeEye for the link. The Die cracking is a perfect match to my coin. Thanks all.

A bit of a lucky guess on my part. I also thought about VAM 53 but when you mentioned all the cracking I gravitated toward the VAM 47. Die cracks don't lie and just like fingerprints are unique. While not the final determinant, they get you on the path to resolution.

Language on the V47 page is unclear

Exact obverse die is shared by v47/v13
Exact same reverse is shared with v47/v53

Agree from what I can see, but perhaps on your list the overlap with V47 is the key.

Hi, appreciate everyone's interest here and time. VAM-47 seems to match pretty well with pitting, die cracking and clashing.
