Is the 1878s VAM27A rarer than a VAM 27? The condition of the coin is very fine but having a lot of fine scratches on it it looks like it may have been cleaned with dish washing soap.

Yes in my opinion, but it's hard to know for sure (or by how much) since the die wear lines that define 27A become less and less visible as grade goes down – and it doesn't help that most L.N. coins are low grade.
When in doubt... don't.

It's also hard to know since it was recently discovered. Many V27s may actually be V27As.

How about saying the V27A was recently "listed" instead of recently "discovered"? This is a pet peeve of mine, sorry.

Noted... and I agree is more accurate. But unless there is a "find and replace" edit function on the VAMworld attribution pages that can be applied en masse it's going to take a while to implement.

There is, but only I have the keys to it. I could probably use it to fix stuff like changing all occurrences of "Vam" to "VAM", or removing apostrophes from plurals, but there is a difference between a variety being discovered (typically a die pair not previously known) and first listed (one listing broken down into multiple ones) that would make doing a global search and replace a not-so-good idea. Also, changing some of them from discoveries to "first listed" would lead to unnecessary confusion and strife.
