I need help with my 1878 S
I need help with my 1878 S
I have an 1878 S NGCMS63, that I see some interesting
die markers.
I'm not sure how to describe the date.
Also pictures of the E,U and R,I,B and the ear and eye.
I see a faint neck clash, on the lips and, on the inside of
both the Rt and Lt wreaths, on the reverse.
What caught my eye was a diagonal die gouge, on the eagle's
right wing and I'm not sure, what that is, where the bottom,
of the wing touches the leg.
, Is that an engraved wing feather?
Any help, would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Bert

Re: I need help with my 1878 S
I just saw a couple of vams, with die gouges, in the wings, but none seem to match.
The vams 41 and 90, but no broken R, in TRUST and no broken forth star and not multiple die gouges.

Re: I need help with my 1878 S
Thank you Lee,
I was looking for vams, that said die gouge.
Is there a difference between die scratch and die gouge?
Thanks agian, , Bert

Re: I need help with my 1878 S
I like the pics. What are you using to photograph?
Re: I need help with my 1878 S
Thank you, on my closeup pictures Cheezhed, sorry I couldn't find your name.
I use about the cheapest digital microscope available, from China $15 delivered.
I do however spend a lot of time, getting the right angle and distance, from the area, that I want to show and focus it in clear, while holding it steady as possible, in my hand.
In other words I don't use a stand and only the lighting, inside the front end, set on high.
I wish I could, that I say I had and used some nice expensive equipment.
