Do these 1921-P cracks look familiar?

Post by DHalladay » Thu Dec 19, 2019 1:48 pm

Here’s another example of the constant frustration with 1921-Ps… a coin with some really nice cracks, but little or no scribbles to help with a VAM attribution. This one has a D2 reverse. Does anyone recognize anything here? Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. :D

There’s not much in the way of scribbles, just parts of 3 heavy polishing lines/gouges just above the arrow shaft between the eagle’s claws. Also note the 2 smaller polishing lines/gouges under the olive branch:

Now for the good stuff. There is a wonderful long (but not real bold) crack from the top of the eagle’s right wing through the word God and into the second s in STATES:

In addition, there’s a diagonal crack from the lower left wreath that clips the top right ‘foot’ of the N in ONE and almost reaches the denticles under E:

Speaking of ONE, there is a thin crack from the left star that goes most of the way to the denticles under O. Also seen in the upper left corner of this photo is a light crack coming from the top of the U in UNITED:

Now for the obverse, where the pickings are pretty slim. The most I could find was various scattered polishing lines. The most interesting are these 3 vertical lines in front of Liberty’s eye:

These next 3 are pretty minor, but they’re all I could find:

Face gouges/cracks and the scribbles are reminiscent of 3FW, but I'm not sure how it would have progressed to have those awesome monster cracks without anyone noticing.

Interesting coin...

Edit: 3FW/81... Whatever the nomenclature...

I don't know what VAM that is, Dennis, but I do know that I have two of them!
(One of them was coin #12 in my last mailing to you)
I was going to send it to JB next week to see if he had an opinion...

I sent this coin to LVA in a batch that went out Saturday. I'm hoping the combination of the vertical lines in front of Liberty's eye and the gouges/polishing lines between the eagle's talons will merit a new attribution. Fingers crossed!

I don't know either, I crossed references this coin from several angles and cant match it up either.
