NNP Research for Morgan and Peace dollar collectors

Post by RogerB » Fri Dec 13, 2019 8:46 pm

Thanks to the Newman Numismatic Portal (NNP) supported by the Eric P Newman Numismatic Education Society, collectors of Morgan and Peace dollars (and other coins) have access to a growing stock of original documents from the U.S. Mint archives held at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).

Among the most useful for silver dollars collectors among NNP’s digital collection are:
Record Group 104, Entry 1. Letters sent by the Director (later, Superintendent of the Philadelphia Mint after March 31, 1873). URL: https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/archivedetail/515202
Record Group 104, Entry 229. Letters received by the Director of the Mint 1873-1938.
URL: https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/archivedetail/527901
Record Group 104, Entry 235. Letters sent by the Director of the Mint 1873-1938.
URL: https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/archivedetail/512703

Each is being actively digitized by NNP. Collectors may view the documents on-line, download pages, or save entire files in a variety of formats. There is no cost to users.

NNP has further digitized thousands of U.S. auction sale catalogs, which may be referenced at https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/auctioncompanies. Periodicals, fixed price lists, and works published serially are in the NNP periodicals section at https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/periodicals.

Send me a note if there are questions.

It's OK to glue it someplace if it will help members.

Much info in the NNP. I always like looking in the counterfeit detector manuals.

I may not be the best, but I do not know anyone better.

There's a lot more on NNP, I was only highlighting some that would contain items of interest to VAM enthusiasts.
Entry 1 includes letters beginning in 1792. Entries 214, 215, 216, and 218 include much materials from about 1835 to 1870. Anyone with interest in a specific time period can contact me and I will tell you where to start looking.

Several new files have been uploaded to NNP. These include entire volumes and file boxes each containing several hundred to over 1,000 pages. These include Letters Received by HQ during the last week of December 1899 and first 2 weeks of January 1900, (E-229 Box 106, 107.) and the same period for 1900-1901 (Boxes 130, 131).

Some of these are not currently visible on NNP due to a scrolling problem in the archive section. They are correctly installed in the database but the user interface has a problem. (If it continues to misbehave the UI will get coal in its christmas stocking...!)

Thanks for the heads up. I am familiar with the Portal but have never thought to look for this type of documents.

NNP offers silver dollar variety collectors the opportunity to examine original documents, including many quoted in hobby books. Also, files never before examined will be posted; and these can contain information that opens new ideas on various coins and events leading to their production.

I've added a "Newman Numismatic Portal Portal" (NNP Resources) on the wiki under the "Other Links" section with the links provided by Roger at the top of the thread.
