I think it's a stain/residue etch of some kind.
When in doubt... don't.

Using this proscope 50x w/leds may not be trustworthy. I will try real light tomorrow. Thanks DHaliaday.

50x is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too powerful. There is absolutely no need for anything stronger than 10x. Some people use 15-20x for looking at very minor date or mint mark doubling but in general, anything over 10x and you're doing yourself no favors. You start seeing things that are meaningless which take you off in the exact wrong direction.

Oh, and like D said, it's just a stain or gunk/shmootz etc.

As the years go by the magnification need increases. You young squirts may never need more than 10x but live a bit longer......
Have a great day!

Maybe a camera with natural light is needed.

I removed a 141 yrs. of shmootz, probably ruined a nice coin and disturbed a nest of Vam eating bacteria that I can't get a photo of.
I will try to kept them quarantined to Michigan.

I would like to compare this to Vamworlds 1878-VAM http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compu ... 63-1-2.jpg. please notice the outline trace of the stain on the first "8". IMO that outline faintly exists on the photo above. It must have existed on the die somehow. An acid etching? Maybe a little spilled after working on that lava-wing reverse, it sounds to me Acids were finding a new use, way back then.

More study is always needed...

Actually, silver is anti-microbial so there was no bacteria. Funny joke tho

True. Mark and his pea-shooter 20x comes to mind but he and others who tend to use higher mag due to that are experienced in knowing what parts of what they're seeing to disregard. In any event tho, 50x is waaay too high.
