Interesting GSA dollar

Post by lewisr2 » Wed Dec 04, 2019 8:15 pm

I obtained this GSA dollar many years ago.
I assumed that someone had filed off the date for some unknow reason.
At the St Charles coin show in early November I talked to a dealer who knew quite a bit about GSA dollars. The next day I brought this GSA dollar and showed it to him. He said that he has seen ones similar to this and that they are dollars that the casinos filed off the date. Reason being the casinos didn’t want people “collecting” their dollars. He also said there should be some scrapes on the reverse also.
The casinos sure must have filed a lot of dollars.

I've heard of casino morgans but I've NEVER seen one that is for sure attributable to being one that a casino did something to to prevent collector hoarding. If that's what this is that's pretty damn neat. @blu62vette has or had a bunch of GSAs with various kinds of damaged coins in them. He wasn't much hot on them being a high end GSA guy but I thought they were pretty neat.

There are a lot of 79s and 81s with weaken or overpolished leaves adjacent to left star and above ONE on reverse. Just my guess. Neat find regardless.

Casinos apparently also used sandblasting to make the dollars un-collectible.

See here.

I think this is an 81-S
There is just a little bit of the top of last 1 in the date showing.

Most of my damaged GSA's are hardpacks that have issues, cleaning, knife marks, etc.

Softpacks tend to have counting wheel marks, I have not seen this filing before. Pretty wild.

I have pics of a hardback where they tested scrubbing off toning. The coin was fully toned and they wire brushed half of the coin.
