Recent 1921-P bulk buy results

Post by DHalladay » Sat Nov 30, 2019 7:04 pm

I recently bought a group of 41 MS63 PCGS 1921-Ps on eBay that were much too cheap to pass up. It was the VAM equivalent of buying lotto scratch-off tickets. I had no idea what they were, but I since I owned ‘em I crossed my fingers and got down to figuring out what they were. Results are posted at the end of this message.

Buying bulk groups is always risky. My SSDC 1921-P date set is 68% complete, so math says 32% of any random group should be coins I need. That is never how things work out, though, yet I keep doing it.

This time was no different. But what was extremely unusual was the percentage of D1 vs. D2 reverses. In the past, D1s have almost always made up 20-25% of my random groups. Less than 20% has happened a lot more than over 25%.

This group, though, was nearly 54% D1 reverses (22 out of 41). I’ve never seen anything even remotely close to it.

That there were so many D1s improved my odds of identifying coins, since for some reason D1s have been easier for me to VAM than D2s. In fact, I’m beginning to wonder if VAM 1 actually exists, since I was recently able to attribute my last 3 “what are these?” D1s, and I no longer have that slot filled in my SSDC set. The more and better attribution pages that are added to the VAMworld 1921-P guides, the more this idea may become an actual theory.

I didn’t get 32% “hooray I need that one!” results. I got 14.6% (6 coins), which actually isn’t too bad. This tells me the 140 or so coins I still need may be pretty tough. (FYI: there are 41 different 1921-P VAMs whose total registered SSDC population is zero. Another 53 have a pop of 1, and 51 have a pop of 2. That’s 145 VAMs right there.)

What I did get is a 100% I.D. rate for the first time, although a couple took the help of fellow ’21-P nuts here on the message board. I thank them once again. Here is the final VAM attribution tally:

Wow. Pretty cool lot for you for sure D. Sometimes those "scratch-offs" can really pay off!.. and what a crazy proportion of D1's!

Oh, BTW, I think I have one or two 21p's from past bulk subs that JB put an "L" on. Message me if you want em. Best you send them to the big guy methinks plus you'll need em anyway if he lists em, if you want. They'll just sit around until I get around to em otherwise 🤠

Fantastic News Dennis!
Your haul is great for VW 2.0 because I'm sure that when you have time there will be great photos documenting your 21-Ps.
Keep up the good work.
:D
