you are correct and it is a common practice seen across many us type coins.

this is a great authentication tool as if you see a previously unknown die-type combination, you know there is more investigation to be done.

this type of identification helped uncover the 93-o, 94-o vam counterfeits, among other years.

Not just that, the first at-a-glance tell are the date numerals. Waaaay off to the trained eye.

It looks like all 5 had COPY or something stamped into them as well that was then over stamped as well. LOL

OR the 1878 is the real rare 1878 Reverse of 21 that's really rare!

This. It's almost like someone pretended to stamp "COPY" on the reverse, but only had a 3" wide stamp with really wide spacing, so it was the thought that counted.

speaking of fakes, a guy brought a coin to the anacs table for submission and Michael asked me if I could look at it. it was a 1916d walking liberty half and it had an appearance of being acid dipped but the date and mint mark were bold. and it had a trumpet tailed s mint mark on the reverse! that style mintmark wasn't used until 1941. anyway, I told mike, and the owner that it was counterfeit, and not even a good one and the guy claims he has had it since he got it as a kid on his paper route. I was wondering, did they have paper routes in shanghai?
