He'd have done more work like this.

Great bit of background, thanks Roger.

For those who want more of the standard silver dollar background, see "Girl on the Silver Dollar" by yours truly. ANA has copies for loan to ANA members.

Just reading the synopsis, there's a lot more to this story. The book is easily found with a Google search. A copy of your very own will set you back around 25 bucks.

William Barber's original reverse for the dollar was made according to suggestions by Linderman. The Director not only wanted an "ideal head of Liberty" for the obverse, but wanted silver coin reverses to have just the denomination and an ornamental wreath. This was consistent with French and other European practice, and can be seen in Longacre's subsidiary silver coin design of 1859 promoted by Director Patterson. Linderman also wanted to remove "E Pluribus Unum" as being duplicative of "United State of America" and put "In God We Trust" on the edge so it did not interfere with the coin's simplicity and clarity of design.

(Aside Note: Longacre's half dollar with varying reverse designs was struck and restruck to supply "trading stock" in exchange for Washington pieces wanted for the Mint's collection of coins and medals. Patterson's goal was to have two entirely complete sets of every coin and medal depicting George Washington. One set would be kept in Philadelphia as part of the Mint Cabinet, and the other at Mount Vernon. They were expected to be popular with visitors. Additionally, they would serve to reinforce a singular commitment to the United States as a legacy of Washington. In the tense years leading to the Civil War, this was a small but important political factor. Later, both Union and Confederacy made persistent claims to Washington's legacy.)

Thank you George T. Morgan for your design of the 'MORGAN DOLLAR'. I don't believe I would of collected any other coin this last 9 1/2 years. This design inspired me, captivating. Tho, I do also like the 'PEACE DOLLAR, TRADE DOLLAR and SEATED LIBERTY DOLLAR'.
