85p with MANY Threadlikes (UPDATE: Back From LVA)

Post by CascadeChris » Mon Jul 23, 2018 10:47 pm

Hey guys. I could use some help on this one. This is the most threadlikes I've seen on a single die (a patch of multiple small ones in the cap. ) I've gone down the list and even disregarding the threadlikes I'm coming up dry. Leroy pile? Or did I miss it? Thanks!

Disregard the "holder"

This reminds me of 1881-P VAM-17. Very interesting stuff.

Hubbed through water spots, we think. The 81 VAM 17 mentioned above is the best example of this (and is the 81 that I'd want for a date set). I think the 85 VAM 9E has this feature, which will be present in unclashed die stages, as well as after the clash, but I could be mistaken.

Thanks guys. Leroy it is! I'll bet he'll be happy to see this feature on such a gorgeous hogh grade BU PL coin. I hadn't come across the 81p v17 before and didn't know about condensation impressions. To me, being so thin, small and plentiful I assumed it was something like a random patch of rag lint.

But water droplets explains a conundrum I had perfectly. Too many of them seemed to be circular or simi-circular which I found to be very odd. I mean, what are the odds? I suppose its possible but for a plurality of what I thought was small threads to randomly lay between the hub and die in a circular fashion struck me as near impossible.

Wheres Alan? Has he posted on the new VW yet?

Did the person who put the coin into the 2x2 think this was a Proof coin? I see markings on the flip that say something like PF+63 and $3000.00...or is that an indication of the proof like nature of this coin and a price to keep people from throwing out silly low offers?

I just found it all interesting...by the way, the TL impressions are really neat.

Hey Ash, I'm not sure who originally wrote that stuff on the 2x2. A friend owns a shop and a random Morgan group lot of 30 or so was brought in which included this one, IIRC.
