Are these being listed anymore?

Post by lured_in_again » Sat Oct 26, 2019 3:07 am

Going through my 1891 o unknown stack of Morgans, noted 2 coins with normal slanted date position and high mm location...but both have an open 9 in the date. There is an open 9 VAM listing (VAM 2) with a photo that looks slanted but is not noted as such. VAM 2 also lists the mm as centered and these are on the high end. VAM 10 is a slanted date, high mm, but the 9 is closed. The unknown coins also have a filled G in IGWT. Call them VAM 2 or 10 or send them in? Thoughts???

I suggest better specimens.
But as far as open/closed and the filled G
All are hub features.

Open/closed 9 aren't really considered much anymore, as they're simply a result of die polishing and not different style date punches. The filled G in God is a common die chip that was never listed as anything special, although it's worth noting as a comment where it shows up in late die stages.

In the condition you show, I would call them VAM 10 (Slanted date, high O) and be done with it. They may be different dies from each other or from the VAM 10 shown, but a higher grade would need to be examined to be sure.
