'Pickin fishies

Post by DHalladay » Mon Oct 14, 2019 10:17 pm

This unattributed NGC MS64 Buy-It-Now arrived over the weekend. Despite drab light gray toning on both sides (dipping would have helped so much), the extensive obverse and reverse die polishing caught my eye, which prompted a fish hunt. I have always been fascinated by the goldfish in the left reverse wreath; it looks like a twin to the one on the obverse. But my greatest fascination is, how on earth did two of them happen?

When in doubt... don't.

A very neat clash Dennis. I grab every one I see.

One of my favorites. I can imagine some poor mint worker trying desperately to remove the remnants of that debris clash...

Killer pick D! Still can't believe my $20 junk bin fish sits in a PC5 holder now. Love hunting these things.

@messydesk always been wondering the origin story. Do tell 😎

This was one that I discovered on someone else's coin, and I think the discovery coin ended up with Mark Kimpton at one time. Not sure where it is now. Given the heavy polishing lines on both sides, the clash must have been a doozy. Possibly the debris became embedded in one side, then was loosened and popped out during polishing. Usually showing up in a nice, frosty 64, this is a cool VAM that can be cherrypicked with some patience.

I have one that I picked, also in an ngc64 holder. I love how they really roughed up the dies.
