1878s VAM-77

Post by Flat-Chested » Mon Oct 14, 2019 5:15 pm

This 1878s VAM-77 had a pre-sale estimate of $400 and sold for only a quarter of that. There is a crack extending through the first three right stars, has this been noted on other late die state VAM-77 coins? Does anybody have any idea as to the population of this coin? Thanx.

NGC registered 3, PCGS registered 12, any idea to determine what quantity ANACS registered? So there are at least 15 of these coins. Auction houses would be well served by doing this research and offering up population numbers before the auction closes.

Anacs has 4:

1-4
2-12
1-15

(+7 more graded with details)

Congratulations!
Yours is just the 5th example I have a sales history for, and is the lowest price price by far.

The coin sold for just $103, I feel a bit sorry for the seller, auctions are a bit of a crap shoot.

It is NOT certain that there are "at least 15" of this VAM. Remember degrade games. Even low graders get cracked and resubmitted - most especially when the finest known is of such a low grade.

Believe the Eakins may have come from out of SWFL a year or so ago

I guess the crack through bottom three right stars isn't enough... instead a field displacement is required for the coin to obtain a new VAM number.

I bought a vam 77 in pcgs vf 25 a few years back for 385.00 at auction.

Did not need it but could not pass it up at that price.

I'd be far less concerned about trying to get extra VAM listings out of a known rarity than I would be in actually finding one. Moreover, for varieties that are typically circulated, I would be averse to it unless it's easily seen and can be shown to be clearly different in low grade.

Another reason it went so cheap is that is in a Ngc holder. Ngc has had a very hard time with easier vams and this one has a big downside if it is misattributed.

PCGS, NGC and ANACS all misattribute the odd coin. It is great that the coins holdered by NGC and ANACS are discounted. I am in the market for the 4 coins that ANACS graded, and the other 2 graded by NGC. With crashing VAM prices, unappreciated low grade rarities, and unappreciated grading companies, consider rushing the coins to me before they lose any further value. I can go as high as $120, offer valid until end of year.

People prefer Philadelphia and Carson City Morgans instead of these San Francisco coins. I placed a high bid well before closing and was surprised to find no opposition. I guess the Hot 50 coins just aren't that collectible any more. Collectors are instead going for the Top 100 coins... the Alligator Eyes, the Hot Lips and the Donkey Tails, or have given up on their sets.

Is it the die crack that goes through 1 2 and 3, and the broken 4th star on this one? Sorry if I sound dumb, just curious. I also have an 1878 with a filled S and a broken 4th star but no die crack on 1 2 or 3.

Went and looked at the explanation. Very cool coin! It's a whole lot to take in, hoping I can actually recognize some of these soon. 25% of estimate is a great buy. Where do you all get your auction history of prices from on these?
