1885 P Morgan with evidence of a rusted die on Liberty's face. This time with pictures.

Post by WJM14 » Wed Jul 18, 2018 3:46 pm

Here are the pictures. At issue is the raised bumps on Liberty's face from the hairline to the bottom of the nose. Most prominently seen in at the eye socket. Does anyone know what VAM this is? Thanks fo any help you can provide.

All I have to compare your coin with is 1921-Ps that have pitting on the face, and in that context yours looks very insignificant.
When in doubt... don't.

Dennis,
Do I see clashing on your coin? I'm not sure.
Could you show a close up of the date?
Thanks
I'm pretty sure that Mitch will know as soon as he sees the post.

Lee:
What coin of mine are you talking about? I was responding to the OP's coin and question.
When in doubt... don't.

Sorry Dennis. I'm trying to get used to VW 2.0. I don't spend too much time here.

I was asking about the 85 photos. It looks like there may be some clashing. Also, I would like to see a close up of the date.

Normal non-slanted date position. A hint of clashing at the intersection if Liberty's neck and chin and cracked bonnet all the way from the rim at "M" nearest the star in umum to the wheat leaves near the word Liberty. I will try to post a better picture but there is a size limit for this site. No pitting on the reverse. Thanks for any leads. WJM14

Here are two other pictures to go with the words. The third one I could not get to load.

Photos are helpful.
Do you have a close up of the date?
I'm a little confused. Is this the same coin in a different thread of yours, or is this a second 1885-P?

Do you disagree with VAM-27 family?

I am sorry for any confusion. There is only one coin but two posting threads. I am just getting used to posting on the site.
Thanks for the Vam 27 suggestion but the cracked bonnet is not the same, the die crack through the date is not present and I do not see the tripling at the ear. Hope this is helpful in finally determining what this is. Many thanks for all the feedback

The confusion is more on my end. I have not spent much time on this site, and am not used to how everything looks and works. I was very comfortable with the old VW. But with some time and help, I will figure out 2.0.

Welcome and I hope someone can help you with this coin. Hopefully Mitch or some one else can help pin your VAM down.

If you like face pitting start looking at 83p's. I swear that 80-90% of the the ones I come across have extreem pitting from fine to coarse on liberty's head/neck. So much so that it's a strong obverse mint diagnostic for me.
Alonzi VW 2.0!
