Sunday funny: guess the grade

Post by DHalladay » Sun Aug 25, 2019 6:57 pm

Coin is in a self-slabbing (?) holder.
Holder label says "Genuine Uncirculated"
Images below are screenshots from the auction.

What's your opinion of the real grade?

When in doubt... don't.

Reverse photo is pixelated because it was smaller in the auction page and I had to blow it up so much to be the same size as the obverse.

Reverse picture looks like crap. The obverse picture tells me the die could be worn as no detail around the ear. What I can tell of the reverse the legs are weak and no feathers on the eagles breast. Again the die could be worn. Since this is an O mint and they can be weakly struck. I had a 1897 O that was Unc that looked like this coin. Could be an AU or MS60. Good example of need coin in hand to look at luster. Since it is a common coin, I would not buy it over melt no matter what the grade is.

AU details. Surfaces have been "smoothed" by excessive JPEG artifacts that came with the low-quality compression, and possibly by other means. Looks like VAM 5. The full-coin shot on the 85-O VAM 5 page is also a pancake, BTW.

Again the die could be worn.
The 85-O dies don't tend to wear down - it's much more likely to be a weak strike that causes that sort of flatness.
From the pixelated pictures it's hard to tell, but I'd think a grader would call that coin VAM 5 AU details cleaned.
