Hello VAMWORLD! and THANK YOU for letting me join!

Post by KevinG » Sun Aug 25, 2019 3:22 pm

Hello All, my name is Kevin, I live in Raleigh, NC. I retired out of the Automotive Industry(20 plus years) about 8 months ago. Now i'm enjoying spending most of my time staying busy with estate sales and some flea market picking, which I've done over the years but now I can do it full time=). I have always enjoyed coins, and I have always enjoyed error coins even more. I'm a smart enough person to know that I'm still a novice when it comes to coins, but I'm learning more and more every week.

Last weekend I went to an estate sale that had 39 Morgans, that were being sold all together. They were 1878 thru 1921, most appeared to be cleaned to the eye, some still had decent luster in the hair, and some(very few) now have better luster than I originally thought when looking at it under my usb micro scope, 500x mag. All I had with me to view the coins at the estate sale was a magnifying glass, so I was more-less looking for doubled mint marks, dates, and as much frost as I could see. My thought process on a bidding price was $13 for the silver and $5 for my curiosity. Well, my curiosity ended up costing me $7.

I'm just now starting to go through these coins under the scope looking for VAM's, the first one I checked out is also the one that I noticed when I was at the sale that had an obvious S over S mint mark. It's the 1887-S, and I believe it to be the VAM-2A. I would like to post a few pictures of the 1887-S and get some feedback to see if I'm on the right track at identifying these. After possibly Identifying the 1887-S I decided to start with the 1921 Morgans and work my way down the the 1878. So, I have 2 of the 1921-D Morgans and the first one I checked out I believe to be the 1921-D VAM-1J(thanks to the awesome charts someone made). so, the 2nd 1921-D has these deep marks(i don't know all the proper lingo) running up to the face from the bottom(7oclock) position of the coin, into the cheek, and a flattened earlobe with I believe to be the same marks on it. I could not find a possible VAM that matched that coin either. The info could be on the list but I could not find it, although the info the community has gathered on here is very VERY impressive, it can be a bit overwhelming for a novice. Another coin that stuck out as odd is a 1890-S, seems to have a perfect bow tie punched in to the top lip, with a gouge running up the side of the nostril, weird looking eye and eyelid, possible doubling on the ear. I'm going to do my best to identify these on my own with the info the community has provided, but I know I'm going to need some help.

I'm not real good at picking up on doubling yet, and the finer points like the majority of you, but I'm learning. But I never miss the pink elephant running through the room. =)

Thanks for letting me be a part of the community!

Welcome, Kevin, to the madness of VAMs. $20 each for a bunch of Morgans was a great buy. Feel free to post and there is so much expertise and just great people on this site you will be amazed. The learning curve is big so don't get discouraged as you will learn as you go along. Now that you are retired you have to do something, right?

Don't be afraid of the Peace dollars as they are generally cheaper and have some awesome VAMs, along with the fact it is easier to locate a VAM not yet identified. Your first Discovery Coin will be a real ego trip. Enjoy and again, welcome to the madness.

The nose looks like severe PMD.
Date looks slanted. VAM 42 and 55 are the only ones.

Hey, thanks for the feedback! It may be a 2 and not 2A. I will post a couple more pics from a different angle. what i was going on was what seemed to the pieces that seemed to be raised starting under the D, and they seem to go back to normal starting around the L.

Not entirely sure to be honest :) From the listing pictures, I can't honestly tell lol :)

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will pop in to describe what defines denticle damage on this one. I don't know enough to say.

Either way, welcome and again, nice first coin

Welcome aboard the crazy train Kevin! Next stop, the graveyard (ie. you're in it for life now!)
My best advice, while trying to find a way to say it without sounding like a jerk, is to ALWAYS consider yourself a beginner. In a year of learning you will know things you wouldn't even imagine now, but there will ALWAYS be more to learn, so know what you know, but never close your mind to "other possibilities" and ENJOY THE RIDE!! There are many of us that have been here for a decade or more, have worked on various "projects" and even found a new VAM or two that will openly claim to still be "beginners" and there are a few fellas that make their livings on VAMs (we call them the professionals  ) and even they will admit they are still learning.
I go totally NUTS for WOW! VAMs!! Or is that from WOW! VAMs?

And yeah, that 90-S looks like it was on the losing end of a back alley brawl. :(
The 87-S I think you can call a 2a, but it doesn't make much difference (other than for your own peace of mind) as both seem to be pretty evenly findable.

Hey, thanks..

just to be clear I was not disagreeing with him on it being on it being VAM-2 or 2A. I was just pointing out to him what made me think it was a 2A, that is just part of my learning process. If It came across of me questioning him I do apologize and it was not intended that way at all.

on the 1887 S VAM2 i noticed i never sent a pic of the Denticles below the date. I did below DOLLAR instead. I would just like to know if these look damaged that could possibly make it the 2A.
