Pics in messenger question...

Post by CascadeChris » Sat Aug 10, 2019 9:31 pm

@messydesk is it possible, can you look into it, or is it not possible to have the ability to send pics in private messages here in the not too distant future instead of having to go off messenger to email when a pic exchange is needed? Asking for everyone. Thanks :)

I should be more specific. A very simple in-house way, as simple as putting pics up here, without having to use an external host, similar to the software that the messaging software uses on the CU forum.

I don't see a way to do it in a PM other than the image or url coding. Both require pulling pics from an external source, not to include your c:drive.

If there is a way to upload a pic from a PC to a PM, that's something JB would have to turn on.

Attachments in PMs were disabled. The only way to include an image in a PM was to reference it from elsewhere.

I've enabled adding attachments to PMs, which is specifically what @CascadeChris was asking about. Be aware that there is still a limit on the number of messages you can have in your inbox, and the PM system is not meant to be a permanent personal archive for storing all your communication with others .

What file extensions can one use with the "add files" button? JPG , PNG or PDF do not work.

Looks like I only partially configured it. I'll look into it further later today.

hmmmmm......seems like this questions was ask before :? Maybe it's the way I asked it........

Question:
PM option for attaching pics
Post by jrfaust » Tue Jan 22, 2019 6:58 am

What would be the chances of having the same option for attachments (drag and drop) for PMs as we do for the discussion board.
Sure would make it easier for us not so smart peeps. Is this something that could be considered? 8-)

Attachments are currently disallowed in PMs to keep the size of the database holding PMs from expanding too much, and to encourage people to post their images to the main board. If there is really a need to send images in PMs rather than personal e-mails or posting in public, I can enable 1 image per message. Be aware that as PMs are not means to be a long term mailbox or substitute for personal e-mail, when your inbox reaches the capacity of 100 messages, the oldest messages will be deleted to make room for new ones. If a message containing an attachment is deleted, the attachment becomes "orphaned" and will also be deleted when orphaned files are cleaned up.

It looks like it's working now. The guidance I gave back above and back in January still applies.

So it look's like file extensions for PDF, DOC, CVS are not going to be enabled?

It is my understanding that jpg is a smaller file than bmp. Am I incorrect?

If the pdf cannot be added I suggest using Paint 3D to convert the pictures. I use a small microscope and it's bmp only, so I convert via Paint 3-D to jpg.

I have to enable various document types. As of now, I only enabled images (JPG, GIF, PNG, BMP). If people want to send PDFs or other types, I can enable those, too.

You are correct. jpg files are smaller than bmp files.

It would be nice to have PDF, word and excel file extensions enabled.
