1891 “EIBERTY” Morgan Dollar, "LIBERTY" MISSPELLED

Post by cats16 » Sun Jul 08, 2018 12:28 pm

I purchased an old home and went through the deceased man’s coin collection. Here is one coin that I discovered..

LIBERTY is spelled EIBERTY on lady liberty’s coronet.

I have never seen this before....

Very interesting, to say the least.
I looked at one of my Morgans and the way the letters of
Liberty are formed.
On the ends of the second letter E, after the B, the top and
bottom ends are angled outward or at an angle.
On the first letter E, the ends are 'vertical' or straight up and
down, like on the bottom of the 'original' L.
This is only my opinion, but I think your Morgan was detailed,
by a 'very skilled craftsman', with some very fine etching tools,
by adding the top and middle arm, on the letter L, to make the
letter first letter E. Bert

I agree, some skillful hand work. Looks like a good deal of circulation after the fact to smooth the whole thing over. Kinda cool example of graffiti.

I agree. The top of the first “E” comes to a right angle... could it have been a wrong die? Who would know more about this? Very interesting

Thanks for the help!

"could it have been a wrong die?"

No, it is an alteration done after the coin was struck.

It's a cool alteration, it might be fun to make one in a higher grade.

I agree 100% with the skilled alteration theory. Looks neat!!
When in doubt... don't.

Possibly no one other than who backed up Bert.

Great observation, Bert.

P.S. Got some really nice looking cucumbers out of the garden today. They will be gone by day's end.

In a photo, certainly not on a coin....that could be duplicated in PhotoShop.
Refrain from computing the total number of poultry... before the process of incubation has fully materialized.

Very neat alteration. Although I cant say I'm a fan of altering that word in any way..

But if it was an alteration, why “EIBERTY”? Someone name? Seems odd

Because it's easy to turn the L into an E. It's as simple as that. Notice the carved middle crossbar, how it curves upwards in a slight lump. It's very hard to hand carve a symmetrical straight line.

Eibert is a German male first name.
Maybe Eibert did the alteration, or it was given to an Eibert?

"EIBERTY trees"

One consequence appears certain. Collectors who are challenged to identify misspellings are well advised to purchase from reputable dealers.

One of the best graffiti jobs I have ever seen. Somebody enjoyed doing this subtle alteration.
