1887 O vam 5A

Just received 1887 O vam 5A Raw original off bay
I saw the cuds below date and 1st & 2nd left stars so pulled trigger on this au50/53
rarity shows 7 -ssdc shows 1-au50 & 1au 50 details for top pop
5B shows many more and into ms grades

Im thinking 5A is a bit scarce with that cud as SSDC shows few - but VV 2015 shows low value
Anybody know more about this one???

Is it a vam 5a or 5b? I’ve never seen a vam 5a that didn’t have the cud AND the radial die crack by the b of pluribus.

Inspired by this thread I decided to look for a 5A.
Didn't find it but after a couple hundred coins found this one.
Ugly coin. But...
Believe it is VAM 11B

Hey; I love these 87-0 Cuds & 11A is way cool no matter what.

5a is super tough bird with only a few au at SSDC 5B not so much with many registered
including ms examples

IMHO= 5A is not as dramatic as 11A which really has great cuds

The 1887 O V-5a is not that rare, it just has a little following and the break by the 7 is extremely minor and on low AU and below coins its hard to see and the rim cud is just starting. Where as the V5b has a nice full rim cud that's long and a really nice displaced break.

Many times people look at the populations of a given VAM and fail to add the " WOW" factor into the interest equation. If the variety has little interest the populations always show up "Low"! More times than not this is not due to the variety being "Rarer" its due to having a low Interest in the collector base. Their is a seller on E BAY that from tome to time lists a VAM that has 1 or 2 total coins listed in the registry, stating HOW RARE IT IS! and pricing the coin out of this world. One needs to remember that for the most part if a VAM has a High demand and the Population is also low for a prolong period of time, that the rarity one finds in the population reports is often true, but for low demand items the reports are often not reliable, due to a lack of interest.
