1888 p Morgan vam 11a, I think.

Post by qwas » Sun Jul 21, 2019 2:14 pm

I believe I found an 11a but would love a bit more feedback on it if possible. Would like to know more about them as well. Rarity, known varieties, etc.

Need more photo information.
But from the information given, I would say no to VAM-11A.

For 11/11A look no further than the ear. It's quite distinctive.

The date looks slanted to me. No matches on slanted dates though.

11A has a slightly high 8...

I'd say it looks good for an 11A from the photos. That ear is standing out. Better picture would seal it...

Lee, thanks for pointing that out to all. Maybe this will be an educational moment that will make some take more time looking at the nuances of this hobby :ugeek:

It's a higher neck clash than the 1B though. You can see the neck/wing line in pic #1.

There's only 3 pairs i can think of with that line, and two are dupes.

Could be a 38A but that ear would have been listed...

I think you're getting confused by the comparison pics. The OPs coin is only in the first post. The other pics aren't of the OPs coin.

First and foremost , thank you for not just ridiculing me. I seriously want to learn. I was thrust into this collecting thing through an inheritance. I am not concerned with value but I really do want to learn about variations . Would it be worth sending away and also who would I send it to to have verified and identified?

QWAS, can you post a shot of the neck front (like others have of their 11a's), trying to show any clashing in front of the neck? I think I see a clash that may reveal a bit of a G or maybe a faint n out in the field.
Also, how about a good shot of the hair vee area?

Ant...
...never mind, carry on. ;)

Also, have you looked through the "VAM attribution 101" from the homepage? If not, take a look at the clashed dies section of that and post pics of the green areas on the obverse. What you need to check are the 2a/2b and 3 areas.

This will help us with this coin, but if you really want to learn about VAMs, go back and read... and reread... then read that again. There is a lot of technical info in there, but you'll learn what it all means (and what you choose to need to know) with time and practice.
WELCOME TO THE CRAZY TRAIN! 8-)

Here is (hopefully) a direct link to the clashed dies section...
