Credit goes too JR. I learned a valuable lesson that I apply at work, "validate assumptions" but am curious about this obverse die, and why it did not rear itself anywhere else. I will wait to hear back from Longnock on his trio of 1i coins; only 7 total in the SSDC registry. I plan to pull my V59 and V18A out of the box to make the trip to OH with this mystery coin.

I'm wondering if any of the "known" 1i's are actually not now 🤔

Just wondering if any other 78-Ss have a polished nose like your obverse besides the 1D2?

The actual progression is Vam 111, Vam 22 EDS, MDS, & LDS then Vam 77.

Package is headed to LVA tomorrow; Longnock’s 3 are all the normal 1i, and from the photo posted for another set in the SSDC registry, it too is the normal 1i; I have no doubt the discovery 1i is anything else. I will keep the group posted when I hear back.

Back from LVA; since the coin is only VG, needs to see better grade coin with more detail; thus, it will not be listed, so I have a unique no-VAM. Maybe someday someone will find a better example that will list. :|

On a bright note, listings for V63, 71 & 81 to be updated.

V63 die 1 obverse shared with V81
V63 die 2 obverse shared with V71

Also, his update to the 78-S attribution guide is still a work in progress with more work to do.

Hopefully he at least made a note of the clearly unlisted die.

Just go find another dollar with the VAM 1i reverse and an obverse not noted. Maddening or inspiring depending on how you look at this hobby.

Have another example of this marriage on my desk today. Even lower grade than Clay's coin, but it's still the mystery obverse die without question.

One of the reasons Leroy doesn't want to list low grades is that it is difficult to differentiate from what's on the die and what happened to the coin. Given two low-grade coins unquestionably of the same die pair, that no longer is much of an issue, and perhaps he'd list it if presented with both coins.

Seems like this has 184 reeds but a couple are mashed. Lined it up with a VAM 18 in the same order and got a good match for the reed count too.

That may be the one Pete (longneck) talked about at 2020 FUN in the lobby. He missed out on eBay to another bidder. I found the coin and yeah it was worse. Looks like it surfaced. I now have a nice 1i, and and no example when I made my 2019 submittal. Do think he would reconsider? Fun fact the discovery 1i is a low grade.

‘m’ on obv is way over polished on mystery coin, more so than either V18A or V1i for that matter, almost to extent of v17, so another good marker

So, the truth of the matter, somebody (me hopefully  )needs to find an example with less wear than the two lowballs out there, and so the quest is on for that obverse!
