Newp purchased as contemporary copy 1884-S

Post by collectinsince65 » Wed Jul 17, 2019 1:51 pm

Pulled this one from a dealers stock that I buy from on a regular basis.
Coin in hand feels correct for weight
U.S. or China?

Looks like a C4 reverse, so fake.

Don't think there was any question that this is bad. The question at hand is whether this was contemporary - intended for circulation as a dollar, or of recent origin. Has an 'old school' look to me. Put me down for contemporary counterfeit, but not the same level of skill seen on the Micro O family.

The circulation on it looks real, but it may have started life with no better than VF-ish detail.

That's neat. I'm with JR. He surmised it well. My first reaction definitely wasn't Chinese Ali coin.

Looks almost like a bad sand cast that couldn't pull out the details to begin with...

If you aren't going to the Chicago ANA show you can send it to me in a couple weeks and I'll have a friend shoot it with an an XRF analyzer for ya so you know what it's made of with percentage readouts of the various types of elements in the alloy. Cross your fingers for a readout of 92-95% sterling 🤞

Dalton is after Chicago. I could give it to him at Dalton instead of mailing it back to you but the XRF will be at Chicago.

Yes, he did. I was gonna hit you up. I totally forgot what it was about. I've left the show BUT Long Beach is coming up soon and I'll have access to the XRF there. Sorry about that. I totally spaced on it wondering why JB gave me an 84s lol. Anyway. Game still on just delayed. LB starts on the 5th. I'll keep it in my bag so shoot me a reminder message a few days before will ya.

Hey Mike, I'm currently stuck in Vegas due to a prolonged family medical emergency. I haven't been home since before the ANA show and while having full time maids is nice I can't wait for this to be over with and I can sleep in my own bed again. I digress though. Hopefully I'll be home in a day or two and will be able to make LB for at least a day trip but its not a sure thing. My situation is very fluid currently. If I do go, I'd say it's an 80/20 on the yes side right now, I'll be sure to have the coin shot. If not I'll PM you this weekend and we'll go from there.

Sorry to hear about your family emergency Chris.
Sincerely hope all involved improve and get better soon.
Don't be concerned if you unable to make the show.
Family always comes first!
All the best
Mike
