With the lines from 32 being present on DH's coin, I'd venture to gamble it would get labeled a 32 until VAM-8 can be inspected to see if it shares the same lines and something needed a revision...

Looks to be more likely a high 9 than a slanted date and those polishing line at cotton bolls stems on your coin look identical to VAM-32. The description says "slight doubling at right inside, top right outside and at very bottom outside. I can see on your 2nd pic of the ear what appears to be some very fine polishing/file lines at the ear location of where the doubling is described to be, gone is the slight doubling. May be a LDS of VAM-32.

Here is a cropped and enlarged ear section of your coin, it does have some remaining doubling. Looks to be a VAM-32. Do others agree or disagree?

And agreed. We need photos for a lot of 89-P.

There's a story behind all these pairs with the same reverse. Whether it's a shared reverse, a damaged working hub that produced multiple reverses with the same leg gouge... Or whether we're dealing with multiple duplicates or a progression of dies...

There's some fun to be had in 89-P for someone with the time and coins.

Doubling (esp. Ear doubling) is known to disappear when a die makes a lot of coins. Just because you do not have a double ear does not mean the first few thousand coin that die made did not. I know this does not make the game any more fun but.... I still think it is a very far slanted date.

Looks like a very far slanted date. What a year to study, maybe 21 P`s might be fun too.

What Fogie said. Die wear can cause many things to appear or disappear. This is the cause of many duplicate listings in my estimation. Die studies folks, die studies.

This. 89 is rife with die wear artifacts, including doubled ears. It's also plentiful enough that the coins needed to do a study can be had inexpensively.
