1892 die crack or break?

Post by mOOSE59 » Tue Jul 03, 2018 10:52 pm

Hi
I am new to VAM's. I acquired an 1892 Morgan with a distinct line starting just inside the denticles and going through the left wing, body almost to the olive branch. I have search and cannot find anything similar. You can feel it with your finger nail. Also on the lower rim there is excess metal.

A picture is critical here, but I'm thinking you either have a split planchet or a nasty knife cut.

Pretty much looks like a cracked planchet or other planchet defect, although it could be a die break, since it doesn't go into the rim. Either way, it doesn't matter, since the coin is a fake.

Compare the left wing gap of your coin to the 92PV2 reverse shown below. Additionally, compare: the upper olive leaf cluster; the width of the legs and the lack of rings; The ratio of denticle height to rim height. The fullness of the breast feathers on your coin does not predict the bluntness of the leaf tips. Your coin is, at once, uncirculated and circulated. Hard to make sense of it. It would be helpful if others commented about what tipped them off. And some may not agree that it is counterfeit.

Is that a reverse of 1921?

No it is not a 21-P reverse for a few reasons. For one, the berry is not in the correct spot to match the D1 reverse. Too many berries for the D2 reverse. Also, the wing gap is incorrect.

Pointing out specific things that flag a coin as counterfeit is a sticky situation. On one hand, you're helping people not get burned again. On the other hand, you're putting information out there that the counterfeiters can use to refine their skills. The best defense against these is to buy from a reputable dealer who stands behind their sales, and learn the coins you're buying well.

Fake. The lettering on the REV says it all..... Good learning lesson, please keep it for reference.
