*Neat* 21 Peace v1H.... [UPDATE: Back from NGC]

Post by CascadeChris » Sat Jun 22, 2019 8:54 pm

Check out this neat satin proof dies 1H with a cracked / defective planchet guys.

I'm considering conservation on her too. Would like opinions. I keep going back and forth between do it and don't do it.

Also, I think this is the first somewhat significant 21 Peace error I've seen. Maybe not, but I can't think of another off the top of my head 🤔

I tried but Tom Hallenbeck wasn't going for it 😂 It was priced very well though with no consideration for, or mention of, the error. I'm guessing a sort employee simply didn't catch it or thought it was minor rim damage not worth noting.

Hey Chris- No opinion on conservation - However, I did purchase significant error 1921 Peace several years ago in
PCGS MS 63 Rim Clip @ 6:00 that shows only top half of numeral 2 making the date appear to read 1991
(at first glance).

Wow Roger. Bet that one looks gnarly! You got me beat for sure. In your experience though, would you call moderately significant errors on 21's uncommon, rare or ultra rare? Say anything above a minor strike-thru, planchet inclusion, baby clip etc.

1921 Peace errors are rather uncommon beyond small defective planchet and small strike thru types. The most
significant error type that I have seen was a rotated reverse close to 90 degrees.
Note: Errors and/or Varieties on KEY DATE Coins are generally viewed by "average" coin collectors as an undesirable
distraction. Generally, only researchers and specialists "fully appreciate" an error/variety KEY DATE Coin!
My nickname for these seldom seen unusual specimen KEY DATE ERROR/VARIETY is "WHITE ELEPHANT".

Agreed. This is far from my first white elephant. But in the case of this particular coin, with it being a Key + one of the best varities of the date + the error being a step above minor but not really major, the mixture of the 3 creates a pretty cool "neat factor."

What I mean by that is that there isn't necessarily one of the three factors that really outweighs the other two to a large degree. My guess is that the trifecta will moderately pump the premium a bit, but not massively of course, and also probably make it an easy quick-sale too which is typically the antithesis of a white elephant using say an 09s vdb with a large strike-thru as the typical example of a "white elephant."

Ok guys, so I took the long way trying to conserve the reverse which is what really bothered me. The black areas on and around the eagle. I actually like the obverse. It has a very nice original look and more color than comes through in static pics.

Took me a few days (ugh, but sometimes gentle conservation is the way to go, it just takes a lot more patience than a quick dip and a prayer)

So, how'd I do? Top is pre-conservation and bottom pic is post...

Thanks. The obverse really does look so much better in hand. It's one of those coins where a glamor shot of the obverse would actually show the in-hand look well. Or a video, obviously.

I was sooo hoping I wouldn't have to do a one-sided dip on that reverse. One-sided dips can be incredibly tricky and they usually end up with having to do the other side anyway either due to messing up and it effecting the other side OR you do it perfectly and you have a bright flashy side with an original colorful and/or crusty other side which can look "off"

Woo hoo! Gotta say, I was a little nervous simply due to the color. NGC hates color. If it isn't spot on typical color and/or pattern for a series/date they tend to kick it back. Not here though. And my 1-sided conservation paid off in spades! 🥳🥳🥳😎

Right. Even tho they're being so stingy right now it seems they'll still drop a nugget or two of fun for the return trip to help lessen the pain.

Meh, I'd rather send to @messydesk anyway. Plus, I highly doubt they even had room on this label for an AOH attribution anyway.

Maybe I should have tho just to see how they would have fit it in but with how they are with color I didn't want to give them a reason to kill it, ie the variety premium value, if they were on the line with it.
