Help ID,ing an 1880 P Check Mark
Help ID,ing an 1880 P Check Mark
OK I won this coin on Heritage and its a MS-63 PL coin. I cant find a check mark listed like it. It has really strong tooling inside the hair under the neck line. I have compared my VAM-16 EDS to it and its not right as well. From the photos, "Keep in mind the photo" not coin in hand, looks like it could have a knub and I think I see some remnants of a cross bar.

Re: Help ID,ing an 1880 P Check Mark
Russ,
I'm not sure yet because I think I need more information.
But if I was forced to make a guess from the information given, I would say VAM-23.
Maybe someone better at 80-Ps can say with more confidence.

Re: Help ID,ing an 1880 P Check Mark
Lemme get a clear picture of the 80 and I'll check against (rimshot) the ones i own.
Check for connected or disconnected leaves. That would narrow down the list to less than a handful.
I can't see your E gouges too well, but look at VAM-16 to start.

23 is an overdate but not a checkmark. I can't see the number surface in the pictures through the slab clearly enough to know what we're looking for

It's coming...

Re: Help ID,ing an 1880 P Check Mark
Russ, saw your first pic with the doubled neck bottom heading toward the designer's intial. It reminded me of the 45 series,V45,V45A,V45B,but some pup's don't match. Did have one that I thought was a Vam 45 possible, but when I got it, was some other Vam with doubled neck bottom. Have to check and see if I still have, seems I remember that crack going from date to the first rt. star.
